The History Of Kasar Devi's Ancient Temple

Uttarakhand's Kasar Devi is a village close to Almora. It is renowned for the temple devoted to Kasar Devi and is also named after it. Incidentally, the temple building was constructed in the second century CE. In the 1890s, Swami Vivekananda travelled to Kasar Devi with a large group of Western seekers. It included Lama Anagarika Govinda and Sunyata Baba Alfred Sorensen. The destination was renowned during the Hippie's movement in the 60's.

But it is positioned on a hilltop near a ridge off the Almora-Bageshwar route that looks out over a settlement (also called Kasar Devi). Although the fundamental cave-carved rock temple is almost 2,000 years old, the Birla family gave it its current form in 1948. Moreover, a temple dedicated to God Bhairav is located on the same hill.
