How to reach Indore: Here’s how to get there by flight, train and road

There are two questions people usually ask before an Indore trip: how do I get there, and what am I going to do once I arrive?

The first one is actually pretty easy.

Indore is one of the better-connected cities in Madhya Pradesh, with regular air, rail and road connections to major cities across India. Once you're here, the city is compact enough to explore by a mix of autos, cabs and public transport, while places like Ujjain, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar and Mandu are close enough to turn Indore into a useful base for a longer trip. The Indore district administration lists air, rail and road as the city's main entry points.

That also means there's no single "best" way to reach Indore.

Flying makes sense when time matters. The train can be more convenient for overnight journeys. Buses work well for shorter intercity trips, especially from nearby cities. And if you're building a Madhya Pradesh road trip, driving to Indore can make the most sense of all.

So before you book the first ticket you see, here's how I'd think about how to reach Indore, and how to get around once you're actually here.

How to reach Indore at a glance

By flight: the quickest way to reach Indore

For most travellers coming from a distant city, flying is the easiest option, and it's usually the first thing people search when they look up how to reach Indore by flight.

Indore is served by Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, the city's main airport, roughly 8 km from the city centre. That makes the Indore airport an easy, short ride into the city regardless of where you're staying. The Airports Authority of India maintains the current arrival and departure schedules, and the airport has taxi and bus transport options for passengers heading into the city.

The airport has regular connections with major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Kolkata and others, although routes and frequencies can change by airline and season. Madhya Pradesh Tourism also lists Indore as an air-connected gateway for the wider region.

And one useful habit: check your flight timings directly with the airline before leaving for the airport. AAI itself notes that published schedules are tentative and advises passengers to verify actual timings with the airline.

Best for: first-time visitors, short trips and anyone travelling from outside Madhya Pradesh.

By train: the underrated option

For many Indian travellers, the train is still the easiest way to reach Indore, especially if you're looking specifically at how to reach Indore by train.

Especially if you're travelling overnight.

Indore Junction, the city's main Indore railway station, connects Indore with major cities across India. Madhya Pradesh Tourism describes Indore as well linked by rail with cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jabalpur and Jaipur.

The biggest advantage of the train isn't just connectivity, it's the timing. An overnight train can let you leave one city in the evening and wake up in Indore the next morning, which means you're not sacrificing an entire day to travel. For a two-day city break, that can make a surprising difference.

From Indore Junction, you can continue to your accommodation by cab, auto or city bus depending on where you're staying. If you're travelling with a lot of luggage, arriving at the station and taking a direct cab is usually the simpler choice.

Best for: overnight journeys, budget-conscious travellers and longer-distance domestic trips.

By bus: useful, especially from nearby cities

Buses are another practical way to reach Indore, particularly if you're travelling from cities within Madhya Pradesh or neighbouring states, and they're often the answer to how to reach Indore by bus on a tighter budget.

The district administration lists bus services as part of Indore's road connectivity, while Madhya Pradesh Tourism notes regular bus and cab links between Indore and destinations such as Ujjain and other cities in the state. The main Indore bus stand options include Sarwate and Gangwal, alongside newer terminals on the edge of the city.

There is one thing to keep in mind in 2026: Indore's intercity bus system is changing. Local authorities have announced plans to shift more than 1,500 intercity buses away from the central city towards peripheral terminals, as part of a traffic-management overhaul. The terminals named in the current plan include Gangwal, Sarwate, Nayta Mundla and Kumedi, so don't assume that every bus to Indore will drop you at the same central point.

Tip: check your operator's ticket carefully for the actual boarding or arrival terminal before you leave. A ten-minute check can save you a much longer auto or cab ride after reaching the city.

Best for: travellers coming from nearby cities, budget trips and shorter intercity journeys.

By road: probably the most flexible option

Road travel starts making more sense when Indore is just one stop in a bigger Madhya Pradesh itinerary, and it's the natural answer for anyone researching how to reach Indore by road.

The city is well connected by road, and its location makes it useful for combining multiple destinations rather than treating Indore as a destination on its own. Madhya Pradesh Tourism highlights road connections between Indore and destinations across the state.

This is where a car or hired cab can be genuinely useful. You could arrive in Indore, spend a couple of days exploring the city and then continue towards Ujjain, Mandu, Maheshwar or Omkareshwar without having to keep changing transport modes.

It is also the better option when you're travelling with family, carrying a lot of luggage, or simply prefer deciding your own departure times.

The trade-off is obvious: road travel takes longer than flying, and you're responsible for the journey. But for a multi-stop trip through Madhya Pradesh, that flexibility is often worth it.

Best for: road trips, families, groups and multi-city Madhya Pradesh itineraries.

How to get around Indore once you arrive

AICTSL city buses are the budget-friendly option, with AC, non-AC and electric services covering most of the city. Cabs are the easier choice when you're carrying luggage, travelling as a group or covering several neighbourhoods in one day. Auto-rickshaws are practical for shorter, point-to-point journeys, especially once you're already somewhere central.

A useful combination for longer stays: AICTSL for the longer, budget-friendly stretch of a journey, and a cab or auto for the final leg.

Reaching Indore from major cities

Reaching Indore and continuing to nearby destinations

One of the reasons Indore works so well as a base is that you don't have to end your journey here.

Indore to Ujjain

Ujjain is around 55 km from Indore, making Indore to Ujjain one of the easiest day trips from the city. There are regular road connections between the two, including buses and cabs.

This is the obvious choice if you're travelling for temples or want to visit Mahakaleshwar and Mahakal Lok.

Indore to Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is roughly 80 km from Indore, and Indore to Omkareshwar is another popular road trip, particularly for travellers visiting the Jyotirlinga temple and the Narmada. Madhya Pradesh Tourism notes regular bus and cab connectivity from Indore.

It's an easy addition if you're building a religious or heritage-focused Madhya Pradesh itinerary.

Indore to Maheshwar

Maheshwar is about 95 km from Indore, and Indore to Maheshwar is best approached as a relaxed day trip rather than something you rush through.

The town is known for the Narmada ghats, Maheshwar Fort, temples and its Maheshwari weaving tradition. Road travel is the most practical way to get there from Indore.

Indore to Mandu

Mandu is roughly 100 km from Indore, and Indore to Mandu is one of the better choices if history and architecture are your priority.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism notes road and bus connectivity between the two, with the journey taking a little longer given the terrain. Give yourself a full day here if you can, Mandu isn't the sort of place you really enjoy by ticking off two monuments and turning back.
