With the advent of winter comes the holiday and festival season. It is the most awaited time of the year for most of us as the country lights up to celebrate many unique events. Gradually you will start feeling the coldness in the weather, your sweaters and jackets will find their way back into your wardrobe from the attic, and the groggy sleep will hang out a little longer than usual, right? Oh hey, it'll soon be THE SNUGGLE SEASON! As much fun as it is to stay in bed the whole day, the thrill of chasing the mountains and the snowfall in northern India will excite you to get on the next flight, train or bus. So here are the top destinations where you can witness snowfall in 2022.

Most of India experiences moderate to heavy cold but there are only a few places in northernmost India that experience extreme cold and snowfall. While growing up watching the snowfall through the cinema, we all have wondered what it is like, right? 

1. Kufri

Situated at a height of around 2,510 meters above sea level, Kufri is a quaint little hamlet in Himachal Pradesh. The wanderer's soul in you will find the best treat in the form of hiking and trekking trails like Mahasu Peak, Fagu, Khuwalia Peak, etc. That's not all, obviously! The snow-clad peaks of the Himalayan range are something of a view to cherish. Since Kufri experiences snowfall in the months between November to March end, there are plenty of opportunities for snowy adventures. You can try adventure sports like Skiing, Tobogganing, Heli Skiing and Ice Skating at Kufri. All of them have a thrill of their own. Or you can build your own snowman and get into a snow fight with your friends. Just make sure to layer yourself up and you're good to go.

A little town situated in the Seraj valley in Himachal Pradesh, Shoja is situated at a height of more than 3,000 meters above sea level. It has an unhindered view of the majestic Himalayan range in all its glory. It is located at almost equal distance from the popular tourist destinations Shimla and Kullu. From Raghupur Fort trek to Jalori Pass trek to Tirthan Valley – Gushaini and Rakhundi Trek to Shreekhand Mahadev Trek, there is no shortage of trekking trails here. The snow shimmering down will add an ethereal element to the trekking experience. The white layer of snow can be best viewed between the months of November to February hence it is one of the best destinations to watch snowfall in 2022. Soak in the beautiful views at this offbeat location with a piping hot cup of tea or coffee. 

3. Kareri

Another small village in Himachal Pradesh that boasts charming views and a simple lifestyle is Kareri. You will be pleasantly surprised to find the easy coexistence and amalgamation of Tibetan, Hindu and Christian cultures which is quite evident through the interactions with the locals and numerous places of worship of each culture. Due to heavy snowfall, the region experiences bone-chilling cold in the months of November to February. If you are looking towards the view of the Himalayan range clad in snow and the sight of a frozen lake then, my friend, Kareri is perfect for you. It is surely difficult but not impossible to trek to Kareri Lake for the most thrilling and enthralling view. Due to such low temperatures and weather conditions, you will be further met with lesser to no crowd and end with the best of experience.

4. Shangarh

Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Shangarh is situated in the Sainj Valley which is a part of the Great Himalayan National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in the Kullu region. Since it is a part of the Great Himalayan National Park, you can witness a wide variety of wildlife thriving in its natural habitat, from sweet chirping birds to rare plants and wild animals. You can plan a detour and visit the nearby villages and spots like Maidana and Tandi. The trees, meadows and surroundings covered in snow are a perfect setting for visiting Shangchul Mahadev Mandir. The beauty gets tenfold enticing. You can indulge yourself in a time of leisure or make your own igloo from the snow or get set for a tough snow fight. Walk into the snowy paths which are untainted and full of bliss at Shangarh. 

5. Shimla

How can we forget one of the favourite tourist destinations during winter - Shimla! Situated at a height of approximately 2,276 meters above sea level, Shimla experiences extremely low temperatures and snowfall. This little town is met with a lot of tourists and locals enjoying the festivities together. Definitely, you must try out fun activities like ice skating, skiing or just a walk down the market wearing your cool jackets, cute boots and snuggly mufflers with warm mittens and gloves while watching the snowfall in 2022. Paragliding and heli-skiing are also an option if you are travelling to Shimla between late October and late February.
