Located in Old Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is the oldest church in the state. It was visited by millions to pay respect and catch a glimpse of the casket of St. Francis Xavier. The casket rests in the mausoleum at the top for over 400 years now. There is an exposition every ten years to pay respect to the body of this Saint. The next exposition will be held in the year 2024. The celebration feast of St. Francis Xavier is held here every year on the 3rd of December. This 16th-century church is the best church in Goa and a UNESCO Heritage site. Exhibiting Baroque architecture, the Church is exclusive to infant Jesus. It has several paintings, marble gilded altars, and marble flooring inlaid with precious stones. It is one of the must-visit Old Goa Church.

2. Se Cathedral

Located in Velha in Old Goa, Se Cathedral is the largest of all churches in Goa. This beautiful Church is famous for its Golden Bell. It was built in 1510 to mark and glorify the victory of the Portuguese over an invading Muslim army. Counted amongst the best churches in Goa, it has received the ‘Golden Rose’ from Venerable Pope Pius XII. This rose is kept in the casket of St. Francis Xavier.

This Catholic church was built by the Portuguese in 1661. The convent serves as a museum with several paintings, sculptures, and artefacts. Situated in Panaji, this 17th-century pristine white church is the oldest, most notable, and one of the best churches in Goa. Besides the main altar of Mother Mary, the church houses altars of Our Lady of Rosary and the crucifixion of Jesus. With Baroque architecture, this church has the second-largest bell in Goa. On the 8th of December every year on the occasion of the festival of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, the church shines with colourful lights. It displays a Baroque-style architecture and is a close replica of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Its magnificent architecture and interior will almost make you forget you are in Goa.
